Law of the Riverside Page 2

February 28th, 2012

Almanac References: Allez, GendarmeRiverside

Page 2 of Law of the Riverside is up. Ald sets foot on a new continent and takes a stroll down Iniquity Row. To see a peek of how Ald reacts to the street theatre he encounters, vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

I owe you all an overdue convention report from Katsucon. Brittany and I were well placed in the Artist Alley, right across from Chris Flick of Capes & Babes. We had Team Tamuran on the other side of our square. Jen of LaSalle’s Legacy wanted part of the action and moved down to join us on Sunday. We also got to hang out on Saturday night with Robyn and Andrew of Technoangel Studios. One of the highlights was joining Chris for a panel on “Running a Webcomic on a Shoestring.” I had a great time with it, but it does require more than shoestring. It also takes Scotch tape and picture wire.

Fan Art Rendez-vous

February 27th, 2012

Hello all! My thanks to Diane for the Webpage updates on Friday. Did you find her new page? The present she left for you was just adorable. The new page is now present on the nav bar across the top. It’s Extras. This is where we will be posting our fan art submissions and various other goodies that will be cropping up in the near future.

As part of our Fan Art Rendez-vous, Brittany received a lovely sketch of Mathilde with Fan by Nadja. To see more of her fine work, check out her Tumblr and Deviantart site.

Hi everyone! Webmaster Diane here, reporting in for Journal duty. I know there’s supposed to be an Almanac update today, but I told Eric to sherry off so I could update a bunch of our graphics.

The most obvious update you’ll see is a font change. Eric and I have been frequently complaining to one another about Caswallon’s surprise swirl attacks, where we’ll be happily typing up a new header and suddenly – BAM! One of the letters turns out to be ridiculously swirly and it completely doesn’t fit with the rest of the font. We were jumping through hoops to dodge the surprise swirl attacks when we realized, uh, this is our site and we can change the font whenever we want to. So we have! Introducing our new BFF (Best Font Forever) Cochin-Archaic. I have to admit that I didn’t like Cochin at first, but it’s grown on me… mostly because it doesn’t attack me with unexpected lettering issues. I’m the kinda gal who appreciates that.

The other update is not obvious – yet. I’ve got a new page in the works and it’s going up tonight, but it won’t be linked anywhere in the site until Monday’s update. There’s a teensy bonus for anyone who decides to go a-huntin’ for it.

Also, if you haven’t yet voted for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics, please do so! Voting incentive at the moment is a sneak peek of Law of the Riverside, Page 2.

Law of the Riverside Page 1

February 21st, 2012

Almanac References: 1665, Cape Adamant, Everique, Saronne, Sherbourg, Sunblaze

Today we begin the vignette Law of the Riverside, drawn by the incredibly talented Natalie Baaklini. This short story presents the tale of how Ald, the gendarme of the Riverside district, came to Sherbourg. Her style is amazing. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Brittany and I are also pleased to announce our Fan Art Rendez-vous. Beginning next Monday, we will be posting a piece of fan art to the site. We will post another piece of fan art every week throughout the duration of the vignette. Diane is making us a new page where we can proudly display our fan art submissions. The guidelines are simple. Create a piece of art that has something to do with Snow by Night. It can be an illustration, poetry, or prose. If you are submitting something written, please keep it under two pages. Send it to my email address as a .jpg or .png (if an illustration) or .doc or .pages (if written). Brittany and I will consider them all and post the the one we like the best to the site. By submitting the fan art, you are giving us permission to post the art to our site. Otherwise, you keep all the rights.

One last bit of news, I’ve added another webcomic to our links page – The Fox & the Firebird. If you love fairy tales as much as I do, then you’ll enjoy this tale about the pursuit of the legendary firebird.

More sketches

February 19th, 2012

Hello everyone. Brittany and I got back from Katsucon this afternoon. It was a great convention. We met a lot of old friends and made some new ones. I’ll have a larger con report on Wednesday when I’ve recovered. For now, I’m uploading the second half of the sketches from Brittany. The vignette Law of the Riverside starts on Wednesday.

Alchemical Lab Sketch
Brittany put a lot of research into Bertrande’s alchemical laboratory.

Mathilde's Hunting Outfit
As the ladybird of the Harp and Trumpet, Mathilde needs many flashy outfits, like this one.

Snow dance
Brittany says that this sketch just sprang to life one day in the middle of drawing a page.

Sketches!

February 16th, 2012

Katsucon starts tomorrow. Hope to see you all there. In the meantime, Brittany and I are considering printing a sketch book of all the design work that goes on behind the scenes of Snow by Night. Britt is a stickler for detail and I’m an amateur historian with piles of books around me when I write the script. Would you all be interested in such a publication? I’ve linked some samples of what we would include. Click on the image to see them full size.

Group Shot Sketch
This was the very first concept sketch of the Snow by Night crew. There have been some changes since then.

Alchemical Rifle Sketch
Brittany was very proud of this sketch of our alchemical rifle.

Blaise and Snow Sketch
I loved Snow-by-Night’s expression in this sketch.

Chapter 3 Page 28

February 15th, 2012

Almanac References: Cienan

Chapter 3 Page 28 is up. This concludes Chapter 3. I hope you enjoyed it. I left a parting gift to all of you in the final panel.

Beginning next Wednesday, we are starting the vignette Law of the Riverside, illustrated by Natalie Baaklini. This short story is the tale of Ald’s arrival in Sherbourg. Lots of action as Ald is a rough and tumble guy with quite a lot of history. Natalie is a fantastic artist. Take a look at her art when you vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

I just got Chapter 2 back from the printers. It looks lovely. You can buy a copy from us this weekend at Katsucon. We’d be happy to sign it for you as well. Even if you don’t buy anything, come on by. We’d love to meet you.

Brittany and I are considering releasing a sketchbook after Chapter 4 (which marks the end of Volume 1).  This Friday and Monday, I’m going to upload some sketches by Brittany. Please let us know if we should do the sketchbook. We’d appreciate the input.
