This week’s Almanac entry are the final three of the planetary metals – mercury, silver, and gold. These are the three most mysterious and noble of the metals.

Interesting fact. Silver was widely believed to be a barrier to disease in Europe. That is why silver was the metal of choice for plates and tableware. Silver was so ubiquitous in tableware that today utensils are called silverware even when they aren’t made of silver. Modern scientific research is backing up this faith in the value of silver for health. Silver does have some anti-microbial properties. Anti-bacterial creams are better at fighting bacteria, but I can’t eat off of that. Maybe I should go dig out my grandmother’s old silverware and start eating off of that…
