Jacqueline Preview 1

June 22nd, 2014

Hello everyone. It’s Eric. I’m back from medical leave. My second daughter came home from the hospital last Friday after her heart surgery. She’s sitting her next to me in the bouncy chair. She’s quite noisy, which is a good thing. She can now get a good head of steam up and bellow with the best of them.

This week’s hiatus preview is Jacqueline. She’s Vivienne’s best friend and aide-de-camp. As I was writing the script for Volumes 3 and 4, I wanted to make a change to her background. More of an elaboration really. There was quite a lot of intermarriage between the settlers of New France and the First Nations. I wanted to reflect that in this story with Jacqueline’s background and make her one-quarter Elakanois. Julie did  an outstanding job of trying to keep her close enough to her previous look while giving her a slight native influence.

Thrilled to hear your daughter’s surgery went well and she is recovering nicely!

i’m wondering for a long time why there’s so much french words in yout comic? Not that i’m complaining (i’m french myself) but still, it’s strange to see a french word in an english sentence without knowing “why?”

The story is set in a fantasy version of French Canada. I’m sprinkling in the French to give it a stronger Quebecois feel. In addition, I’ve always had a lot of admiration for the French and the French Canadians. Eventually, I would like to have a complete mirror site for Snow by Night in French. For now, I’m talking to my Quebecois friends to translate the story into French.

That’s why I find this comic so interesting. I’m American, but my great-grandparents were Quebecois. Would your Quebecois friends add in more slang in the French version, that is, if they translate the story?
