This week’s Almanac is the Clans of the Liranequois. The clans are the family lineages of the Liranequois, each one dating back to a famous female ancestor. Maybe someday I’ll include stories about each of these legendary women, but it’s beyond the scope of the comic at the moment. The women hold the power in the clan, with each clan ruled by a matron. This has caused the Japethan colonists to consider the Liranequois a matriarchy. Which is partially true. We’ll discuss the sachems next week.

I’ve been working with a couple Native American artists for future vignettes and other projects. I would like to include more. If you’re a First Nation artist and interested in doing some freelance work for Snow by Night, please drop me an email at eric (at) snowbynight.com.

Chapter 11 Page 19

September 8th, 2015

We’re back to Blaise on Chapter 11 Page 19 in Tionnontego. Snow-by-Night is active for the first time in a while. Blaise has no idea what is happening, but he’s taking the brunt of it. That seems to be his lot in life. To see a fantastic manifestation of Snow-by-Night, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

In this week’s Almanac, I discuss the Nations of the Liranequois. Together, these five nations form the Great Longhouse. I’m continuing to draw inspiration from the Haudenosaunee and I am fascinated with the concept of basing the government off the structure of the longhouse. It emphasizes the confederation as a family structure. This is a drastic shift from government as divine right or the three estates that were prevalent in Europe at this time.

Oh, Monday is Labor Day and a holiday. I’ll be out with family. No update on Monday. We’ll be back on Wednesday.

Chapter 11 Page 18

September 1st, 2015

Mathilde visits Jacqueline on the upper gallery on Chapter 11 Page 18. The two seem to be forming a tentative alliance. Hopefully, their relationship will be healthier than Jassart and Vivienne’s.

We’re back to Blaise on Monday. To see what is the focus of his scene, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

Chapter 11 Page 17

August 30th, 2015

The scene shifts back to Sherbourg and the Harp & Trumpet for Chapter 11 Page 17. Some readers commented that things were getting a little tense, so on this page, we get another of Mathilde’s cabaret skits to lighten the mood. They’re rife with bawdy double-entrendre. Jacqueline hasn’t experienced much like it. To see what Mathilde does next, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

Almanac – Three Sisters

August 27th, 2015

Today’s Almanac entry is the Three Sisters, which are maize, beans, and squash. These three plants grow well together and when eaten together give you all the nutrition you need to survive. Maize is missing a couple amino acids which beans provide.

As the entry discusses, the plants thrive in close proximity. The companion planting of the Three Sisters developed by the Native Americans was a brilliant agricultural practice. These three plants supported the growth of their towns and culture from the deserts of the southwest to the seashores of the northeast and everywhere in between.

Chapter 11 Page 16

August 25th, 2015

What? Another page already? How did that happen so soon? Coming back from vacation is always a rough re-entry. Anyway, Snow-by-Night refuses to appear upon command on Chapter 11 Page 16.

Why does the manitou not appear? Is it she doesn’t have the energy? Or is it she doesn’t like being summoned like a dog? Or maybe she doesn’t like the current company? You be the judge, as Snow keeps her own council.

Our scene shifts back to Sherbourg on the next page for some fun with Mathilde. To see her next skit at the Harp & Trumpet, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
