I know we were in the middle of discussing Astronomy in the Almanac, but things moved in another directions this week. Diane and I have made a lot of revisions to the format of the Almanac. We combined the subcategories onto the same page and added bookmarks at the top of each topic. It is my hope that the changes make the Almanac easier to navigate and more pleasing to view. In addition, I added a new introductory paragraph to the Language section.

We’ll get to the planets of Corthis next week.

Almanac – Astronomy

September 29th, 2011

This week’s Almanac entry is Astronomy, the study of the ethereal heavens above Corthis. There is quite a bit to it so this is coming in installments. We’ll begin with the stars and why they command the imagination of the people of Corthis.

Almanac – 15th Century Timeline

September 23rd, 2011

For this week’s Almanac entry, I’m adding the timeline from the 15th Century. The history section of the Almanac needs a little love so we’re reformatting it as a single timeline instead giving each century its own page. That might happen in time, but for now I thought this was easier to understand.

The 15th Century was an exciting time in Corthis. A navigator from the Freeports of the Kennard Reach sailed the Livian Ocean and discovered an entire new continent, which kicked off the Age of Discovery. The many voyages of this century set the stage of the colonial expeditions of the next century. But that’s another entry.

Almanac – Updated Format

September 15th, 2011

This week’s Almanac entry is an updated format. Diane and I (mostly Diane) have updated the format of the almanac to include graphics of books for each of the major topics. The subtopics are listed below each of the books. We have also included a Return to the Shelves link at the bottom of each subject page. It is our hope that this will make the Almanac easier to navigate.

Brittany and I are off to Intervention tomorrow. Come by and see us. We’ve got free buttons! (And some pretty awesome buttons for sale). We’re at table 44. You can find us on this handy-dandy map of the vendor’s room.

Almanac – Elemental Symbols

September 8th, 2011

This week’s almanac entry is the alchemical symbols used for the five elements.

Only one more week until Intervention. A lot of great artists are coming, including some good friends of us here at Snow by Night:  Jen Zyren Smith of LaSalle’s Legacy, Eren and Chezhnian of Tamruan, Dawn Griffin of Zorphbert and Fred, Travis Surber of Hainted Holler, Elaine Corvidae of Riven Sol, Chris Flick of Capes-n-Babes, Chris Impink and Barb Fischer of Sledgebunny. Whew. That was a lot of linking. Go visit their sites. They’re all great artists. Then come see us at Intervention.

Almanac – Alchemy

September 1st, 2011

This week’s almanac entry is alchemy – the magic of Corthis. Magic isn’t really the right word for it. Corthis is a scientific world, but its science is difference than ours. It is modeled on the principles of science of the time of Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler, René Descartes, and Gottfried Leibniz (or more generally, in the early years of the Royal Society of Great Britain and the Académie des Sciences of France). This means Newtonian alchemy actually works. The spheres of the planetary spheres work per Kepler’s Platonic solids model (with a Corthis-centric model instead of a Helio-centric one). Anyway, please check out the first installment in the alchemy of Corthis. There will be many more as Blaise and Jassart begin to unravel the mysteries of the world – or more accurately trip over them.

A few other things. We will not be updating a page on Monday because of the holiday (hurrah, Labor Day!). So look for the next page on Wednesday. I’m posting an extra-long almanac entry to cover Monday.

Also, Snow by Night will be in the Artists’ Alley of Intervention. This is my favorite convention of the year (with perhaps GenCon being a close second.). It’s an incredible event. I’ll be on two different panels: (1) Young Punks Kicking It: the new kids on the block at 1 p.m. on Saturday and (2) Writing and Creating Three Dimensional Characters at 1 p.m. on Sunday. You should come and see us and this great convention.

Almanac – Bertrande Grusseau

August 25th, 2011

This week’s Almanac entry is the bio for Jassart’s supplier of alchemical knick-knacks – Bertrande Grusseau. She’s an extremely competent alchemist and barely tolerates the sly rook, but his money is good so she keeps dealing with him. Since Bertrande is a character, her bio is also listed under Cast as well. You may have questions about how alchemy works in Corthis. That topic is the subject of next week’s almanac entry.

Chapter 2 Page 13 is posted. Jassart meets with his supplier of all things alchemical.

I’m back from Baltimore Comic-Con. It was a nice convention and we met a lot of great people. Stan Lee was there too. Strangely, he did not come by the table to talk to us. I’m sure it was an oversight. Next up is Intervention in Rockville in September.

Brittany gave me some sketches of the clerical vestments for the priests of Giavere. For a peek at them, vote for us on Top Web Comics.
