Almanac – Crimes of Taxation
April 10th, 2014Smuggling, Tax Evasion, and Guild Evasion! The Crimes of Taxation are the subject of this week’s almanac since Blaise and Jassart are searching the house of known smuggler. Smuggling is more than just avoiding duties. The colonial government puts strict limits on how many furs go out and how much brandy goes in. This keeps the price of furs elevated to where it is profitable. This limitation is one of the most flouted laws in the colony.

Would this be just an amazing coincidence that this comes up just as U.S. Income Tax Day is approaching in a few days? (when the government commits its biggest “crime of taxation” against all of us) Or shall we call this really good planning ahead? :)
Amazing coincidence. I didn’t think about any real world implications while writing this. I was lost in a haze of stories and history.
