Almanac – The Sweet Seas

November 22nd, 2013

This week’s Almanac entry are The Sweet Seas. What happens when you put the Great Lakes through a fantasy filter? Great things, naturally. (Oh, the puns.) Read all about the five freshwater seas of Everique in the almanac. They are the beating heart of trade, communication, agriculture, and a vibrant native society.

Don’t forget to check out Kez’s What It Takes. It’s a fine webcomic with good art and good story.

One does not want to be out on Gitchgami during the Gales of Barebranch as many a voyageur has found. 29 voyageurs in a large canoe met their fate in one such gale and their story has become the stuff of many songs and legends.

Those used to the large swells of the Great Seas often discount the dangers the Sweet Seas bring. The smaller yet far more frequent and violent waves of the Sweet Seas arise suddenly with little warning. Even Lac Lirane is far more deadly than many would believe, its very shallowness creating conditions for the choppy waters that devour the canoes of the unwary.

Such is the danger of the sweet seas, brave citizens of the various cities (such as the one at the strait between the lake named for The Holy Woman of Clarity and Lac Lirane) regularly set forth into the storms to attempt rescue of the unwary or unwitting who are caught in these short but violent storms.
