Almanac — Tomahawks

November 29th, 2012

This week’s almanac entry is the famous tomahawk. This useful tool is ubiquitous on the colonial frontier. Besides, it’s fun to say. Tomahawk, tomahawk, tomahawk. Also, don’t forget to vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics. Every vote is very appreciated. You can vote daily.

Fun fact I learned while researching Snow by Night — all those tomahawks that the Indians used? They were trade goods. The tribes didn’t forge their own iron (at least not in significant quanities). There were entire forges in France doing nothing but pumping out tomahawk heads for the traders to swap for furs. But wait, you say, tomahawks were everywhere among the tribes. Yes, you’re right. That’s how widespread the fur trade was in North America.

By the way, I ran across an incredible resource for people interested in life in colonial America — The Journal of the Early Americas. If this period interests you, I recommend it.

November 20th, 2012

Almanac References: Manse, PesteSeigneur, Silver

Jassart and Blaise’s efforts to give Laurent the slip come to naught, as the gambler and his thugs confront the boys on Page 15 of Chapter 5. This doesn’t look like it will be solved peacefully. To see Brittany’s pencils for this page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comcis.

If you haven’t had a chance to do so yet, please check out the Snow by Night store. We have some sales coming up after Thanksgiving so stay tuned.

Chapter 5 Page 14

November 18th, 2012

And we’re back to the main story! Naty is feeling much better so the colored pages are arriving again. Chapter 5 resumes with Page 14 wherein Blaise and Jassart make their break for it from the Harp & Trumpet. Over the roofs and through the alley, to escape Laurent, they go! To see Brittany’s pencils for this page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comic.

I also had the opportunity to go through all the pictures from Nekocon (and about a hundred pictures of my daughter). I really enjoyed Nekocon. It’s a great convention that is incredibly convenient with lots of hotels, food, parking, and awesome staff. Take a look at the Nekocon 2012 photo album on the Snow by Night Facebook page.

One last thing. We will have a second page this week on Wednesday. However, we will be skipping the Friday almanac entry in celebration of Thanksgiving. Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Almanac – Governor General

November 15th, 2012

This week’s almanac entry is the Governor General of Aradie. This is the position the Vivienne’s father holds (and will continue to hold thanks to Vivienne). The position is influential in the colonies but most governors see it as a stepping stone to bigger and better things back in Japethe. I still haven’t have a chance to sort through the pictures yet. I’ll try to have that done before Thanksgiving next week.

Losing by Winning Page 8

November 13th, 2012

Almanac Reference: Gloire, Governor General

Losing by Winning concludes today with Page 8 of the vignette. Vivienne learns there are consequences to her words and her family’s future is solely in the new world. My thanks to Sunny for a fantastic job on this vignette. She stepped up and got all the pages done a month ahead of schedule all while dealing with Sandy and its aftermath. Thank you so much, Sunny.

In other news, I’m back from Florida and getting caught up on everything that stacked up while I was gone. I’m going to try to have the convention photos from Nekocon up on our Facebook page this Friday. Brittany already uploaded some photos from Anime USA. I’ll see if she has any more.

Losing by Winning Page 7

November 11th, 2012

Vivienne and Marguerite square off for the final round of the marksmanship competition in Page 7 of Losing by Winning. Who will win the prized pistols from Aileon? Who will gain the upper hand in their rivalry? Inquiring minds want to know! To see Sunny’s sketch for the page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comic.

My thanks to everyone who came by the table at Anime USA and met Brittany and Diane. This was Diane’s first time running the table, and she came in lolita cosplay on Saturday. Trial by fire, eh Diane?
