Chapter 8 Page 6

December 18th, 2013

Guess who managed to find Bertrande’s laboratory on Chapter 8 Page 6? To see a preview of the next page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

This is the last page this year. We have an almanac entry this Friday and then we’ll be off for two weeks for a brief hiatus over the holidays. If you would like to have a piece of your fan art displayed during our hiatus, please send them to me. See my email addy on the About page.

Fun fact, when Brittany drew this page the sword hilt on the bookcase was obviously a katana. I replied that it had to change. No Samurai Jacques. At least not yet. The search for Catai is what drives so much of the exploration of this age. So Brittany made it a sabre for me.

Don’t forget to check out the SpiderForest webcomic of the week — The Sundown Boys.

Chapter 8 Page 5

December 16th, 2013

Bertrande begins the experiment on Chapter 8, Page 5 and Snow-by-Night does not find it a pleasant experience. Run, Blaise, run! To see a preview of the next page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

Next week, we will be on break. If you wish to have a piece of fanart prominently displayed, please send me your creations. You can use my email on the About page.  In other news, Minuiko sent over some updated pages for A Life So Free. I’ve updated the pages. They are 7.v1, 7.v3, 7.v4, 7.v7, and 7.v8. The tweaks she made improved the pages noticeably.

The SpiderForest webcomic of the week is The Sundown Boys. Set in an alternate, dystopian future where cities, states, and even countries have succumbed to the richest and most dangerous criminal organizations, Robert, Leon, and Geoffrey Heron work as soldiers and assassins for the DeSaule Organization. After a chance encounter with a girl from Leon’s past, the brothers find themselves swept up in a major conspiracy which will reveal not only a startling secret about the brothers’ abilities, but also long-kept secrets of the DeSaule Organization.

Chapter 8 Page 4

December 10th, 2013

Bertrande has Snow-by-Night well in hand on Chapter 8 Page 4. The alchemical seal that Bertrande has drawn on the floor not only prevents the manitou from escaping but from pulling upon the aether to manifest her snow powers.  To see what Blaise is up to, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

I also want to give a plug for Robin Childs and her webcomic Leylines. She’s running a Kickstarter project to fund the printing of Volume 3. She is weaving an incredible story with solid characters, excellent pacing, and an intriguing story. Join me in helping her get volume 3 printed and become one of her backers.

Also, don’t forget that we have some opportunities to upload some fanart at the end of the month when we take a brief break for the holidays. I’d love to show of some of the talents of the Snow by Night fan base. Please send me any submissions (email is on the About page), along with the name you want posted and any portfolio links.

And lastly, the SpiderForest webcomic of the week is Supervillainous. Check it out when you have a moment.

Chapter 8 Page 3

December 8th, 2013

Knowledge is power on Chapter 8 Page 3. Snow-by-Night is bound as Bertrande prepares to extract her aether. To see a preview of the next page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

So Blaise’s commentary about everything being uphill was drawn from Brittany and my experience in Québec. Our friends were kind enough to drive us downtown to see the Old City. We left the car and went uphill. That evening, we walked uphill to get back to the car. Brittany and I looked at each other and said, “Wait a minute… how… what? Is this city built on a giant möbius strip that is always going up hill?” Apparently in Québec, you can go uphill both ways to walk to school. Oh, and you will be walking through the snow.

I saw Thor over the weekend. I enjoyed it a lot. I was particularly entertained by the Norse in Space artistic style they had through most of the movie. The blending of the fantasy and science fiction elements together reminded me lot of the old ’80s movie Krull. I haven’t seen Krull in a long time so I don’t know how well it stands up, but something about the artistry of Thor kept reminding me of some of the fun ’80s fantasy movies with much better special effects.

The SpiderForest Webcomic of the Week is Supervillainous. It’s a relatively new webcomic of a super villain who is trying to juggle work and family life. If you like a satirical look at the superhero world from the villain’s point of view, this comic is for you.

Also, we have our call for fan art. Snow by Night will on a brief hiatus over the holidays. We would be more than happy to post any fan art during that time. It’s a great way to get notice for your comic or portfolio. Send any inquires to me at eric (at) snowbynight.com. Thanks!

Chapter 8 Page 2

December 4th, 2013

Bertrande and Jassart trick Snow-by-Night into the chair in Bertrande’s laboratory on Chapter 8 Page 2. Bad things will come of this. To see a hint of those bad things, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

I’m tempted to make Snow-by-Night’s comment into a button. Maybe “I sit through opera without restraints.” Or maybe “Opera without restraints.” Not sure yet. I’m still playing with the wording.

We will be taking our holiday break from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3. There are a lot of holidays in there and the team will be spending them with our families. So there won’t be any pages or almanac entries during those two weeks. We’ll resume on Jan. 6. During that time, I’d be happy to post any fan art. If you’re an artist, think of this as free publicity. I’ll put your art up on our landing page and give the link to your portfolio/website/webcomic. Check out some of the previous work done as fanart on our Extras page.

A little bit of legalese. If you submit fan art to Snow by Night, you are granting Mythmakers a limited license to display the art on our webpage. You retain all other rights to it. In fact, Mythmakers will give you permission to sell the fanart, even though it uses our characters, as long as you include a link to our website on the art itself. The link can be small and unobtrusive as long as its legible. If you previously submitted fanart to us or participated in Art Contest earlier this you, this permission retroactively applies to you too.

The Spider Forest webcomic of the week is Cooties. They’re in space at the moment. Yes, teenagers in spaaaaaaaaace!

Chapter 8 Page 1

December 2nd, 2013

We begin Chapter 8 Of Making and Unmaking with Page 1. We’re back from our vignette to the present day. Who’s that making a chalk drawing on the floor? What’s up with the drawing? Who’s that on the wall smiling? Why is his portrait on the wall after what he did? All will be explained in the coming pages.

You may have noticed our new layout. Many of our readers recommended a landing page for the comic. After giving it a lot of consideration, Diane and I decided to restore the landing page. We thought that this would give you, the readers, more options when you first come to our site.  You can go to the start of the chapter, a particular page of the chapter, the Table of Contents, or the most recent page. Also, we have links to the most recent almanac entry and to our store below. I particularly like the idea of keeping that beautiful almanac image by Erin Mehlos on the front page more than just once a week. Let us know what you think.

We are also giving thought to removing the arrow key navigation from the pages. Some readers said that they use the arrow keys when writing comments below and having the arrows tied to turning pages caused problems. Let us know your thoughts on this. We may be removing the arrow navigation in the near future.

The SpiderForest comic of the week is Cooties by Nick Perkins. Cooties is an all-ages comic strip which follows a bunch of kids and their adventures dealing with school, friends, parents, the opposite sex, and the occasional paranormal/extraterrestrial catastrophe. One of the joys of webcomics is watching the quality of the art evolve over the pages. Cooties does this rapidly. It’s like watching one of those sped-up videos of a flower blooming. Check it out!

A Life So Free Page 10

November 26th, 2013

We return to Bertrande and her reaction to Peyre’s letter in Page 10 of A Life So Free. This concludes the vignette. My thanks to Minuiko for illustrating it. She helped bring the scenes of the voyageurs to life. Thank you for all your hard work. She now joins our ranks of our contributors on our About page.

We will begin posting Chapter 8 on Monday, Dec. 2. It’s titled Of Making and Unmaking and will be picking up right where we left off in Chapter 7. To see a preview of the great cover page that Brittany did for Chapter 8, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

We will not be updating the Almanac on Friday because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Also, this Friday is Native American Heritage Day as the capstone of Native American Heritage Month. Our thanks to the First Nations for being one of the inspirations for Snow by Night.

And finally, don’t forget to check out Kaspall, the SpiderForest webcomic of the week. Good stuff over there. Lucy is a talented artist and writer.

A Life So Free Page 9

November 25th, 2013

Peyre meets his end in the icy waters of the Upper Country on page 9 of A Life So Free. Shooting the rapids was a dangerous temptation for the voyageurs. You could either carry your weight in furs and then come back and get the canoe — a process that could take hours of heavy labor. Or you could avoid all of that by shooting the rapids. The Ottowa River is littered with rapids named after the voyageurs that drowned there. To see the a preview of the final page, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.

This week’s SpiderForest webcomic of the week is Kaspall by Lucy Lyall. It’s a long-running (from 2005) mystery comic. A good bit of the supernatural creeps into the story so be ready for thrills and chills.
