More colonists join the fight against the flames on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snowbynight.com\/pages\/ch8\/pg27.php\" target=\"_blank\">Chapter 8 Page 27<\/a>.\u00a0Fires were a terrible threat to colonial towns in the 18th century. If left uncontrolled, a fire could wipe out an entire town, leaving the population to freeze and starve in the harsh winters of North America. You can read some of how the colonists fought fires on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.org\/history\/teaching\/enewsletter\/volume7\/sept08\/firefighting.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Williamsburg site<\/a>. As for the fire truck they&#8217;re using on today&#8217;s page, here&#8217;s the actual device. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colonialwilliamsburg.com\/do\/art-museums\/wallace-museum\/fire-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Newsham&#8217;s Fire Engine<\/a>.
