Snow by Night

We conclude our holiday sketches with a beautiful piece by Sunny Lee, the artist of Losing by Winning. She presents Vivienne and Marguerite as the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King. I’ve always liked the Nutcracker, but I gained a new appreciation for it after seeing my toddler standing in front of the television twirling along to the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies.

This week’s Almanac is gunpowder. Alchemical gunpowder, that is. Salt (charcoal), sulfur (sulfur), and mercury (saltpeter) in unison to create a highly flammable compound. Interesting factoid. Europe (like Japethe) had a shortage of naturally occurring saltpeter so chemists developed the “French Method” of making it. What is the French Method? It’s a polite way of saying that they use dung and urine to make saltpeter. Oh euphemisms.

This is our last page before our holiday break. There is an almanac entry this Friday (I’m thinking about discussing gunpowder).
