Almanac – Planetary Metals 1
March 7th, 2014This week’s Almanac Entry covers the Planetary Metals Lead and Tin. They are influenced by the planets Elus (Saturn) and Zenos (Jupiter). More fodder for you artists thinking about submitting to our Art Contest. Deadline is March 15. This is a great chance to show off your art skills and win prizes.
Our real world alchemists believed that lead was influenced by the planet Saturn. Saturn was the Roman name for Chronos, the Titan of Time in Greek mythology. Interesting thing, all elements with a atomic weight heavier than lead are radioactive. Which means that given enough time, they will decompose back to lead. This radioactive decay is one of the most exact timekeepers in existence. Scientists can measure the age of radioactive rocks based on the amount of lead in them. Even today, Saturn’s signature as the keeper of time is felt in science.

March 5th, 2014Vivienne plunges into the burning laboratory to find survivors on Chapter 8 Page 23. I do love Vivienne. She’s such a fearless character. That often gets her into trouble. Anyway, to see what Vivienne finds, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
Our Art Contest has an extended deadline – March 15. I’m thinking about giving artists even more fodder for consideration by discussing the planetary metals on Friday. The planetary metals are fascinating to me and could have all sorts of possibilities for the art contest.
Chapter 8 Page 22
March 3rd, 2014Blaise warns the town of the fire at the alchemists lab on Chapter 8 Page 22. Along the way, he passes Vivienne and Jacqueline. Vivienne is never one to turn down a challenge. To see a preview of what she does next, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
We didn’t get quite the same response to the Art Contest as I did last year. I have more prizes to give away than entries so far! So I’m extending the deadline for the Art Contest by a week to midnight on Saturday March 15. If you are considering submitting, please don’t let the alchemy theme get in the way. Alchemy is a broad subject. Any element would qualify. So a bit of fire. Or some dirt. A bit of wind. A pool of water. We also have the different alchemical theories, planets, metals, and more to draw from. Don’t let the theme hold you back from submitting!
Almanac – Laws of Alchemy
February 28th, 2014Today’s Almanac entry is the Laws of Alchemy. I’m giving the three most important. For you FMA fans out there, you will notice that the Law of Equivalent Exchange is not on the list. That’s because that law is a subset of “All is One.” Since everything is one, you can’t destroy or create matter — you can only transform it.
Only 1 more day until the deadline for our Art Contest. We’re coming down to the wire. We’ll announce all the submissions on Monday and begin the first round of voting with the seeding contest on Monday. Please send us your art!
Almanac – Alchemical Processes 3
February 26th, 2014Some good news and bad news today. The bad news first. Our colorist had a computer meltdown this week and wasn’t able to get page 8.22 done. So the good news is we have a surprise almanac entry. I’m discussing the final three processes of Alchemy.
The deadline for our Art Contest is days away. Join the contest for a chance at our cash prizes. We would love to see your take on our characters and a world of colonial fantasy.
Chapter 8 Page 21
February 24th, 2014Bertrande’s laboratory is devastated on Chapter 8 Page 21. Jassart has survived the experience; Bertrande does not appear to be as fortunate. Another two characters arrive on the scene on Page 22. Please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics to see who it is.
Speaking of blasts from the past, I’m pleased to announce the artists for the vignette following Chapter 8 are Shazzbaa of Runewriters and Steph Stober of Final Arcanum. I’ve long been a fan of Shazzbaa’s work, and she did a superb job with Daughters of the King. If you’re a fan of Shazz (and you should be), you know that her comic is currently on hiatus and she’s not taking any personal projects. However, I already had her on board for this vignette when she reached that decision. We worked it out with Steph Stober joining the vignette team as the colorist. I’m so glad we did. Steph is another great artist with whom I’ve been wanting to work for a while. I’m very appreciative of Shazzbaa making the time in some difficult circumstances.
Entries for the Snow by Night Art Contest are due Saturday March 1 by midnight. We’d had some incredible submissions last year and the SbN team is looking forward to seeing this year’s creations.
Christina Major is running a Kickstarter Campaign for her hilariously awesome comic Sombulus. She’s so close to making this happen. Please join me in contributing her her Kickstarter and making this a reality.
Almanac – Alchemy Processes 2
February 21st, 2014This week’s Almanac entry is the next two alchemical processes – separation and conjunction. Alchemy always works on the mental and spiritual levels as well as the physical. If I do my job right, you’ll see these processes at work on the characters in the story.
We’re doing a lot of alchemy in the almanac this chapter. I’m trying to give all interested artists more fuel for the theme of our Art Contest. Only one more week to go! Send us your submissions soon. We’d love to see your take on our tale of colonial fantasy.
Chapter 8 Page 20
February 18th, 2014The powder explodes and sends Jassart flying on Chapter 8 Page 20. To see more carnage, please vote for Snow by Night on Top Web Comics.
I’ve got some recent convention news. Snow by Night will be at Animazement in Raleigh NC on May 23-25 and at Connecticon in Hartford, CT on July 10-13. I applied for an Author’s Avenue table for GenCon, but was wait listed. Cross your fingers with me to see if we can get into the four best days in gaming!
Submissions for our Art Contest are due March 1. Send us your art. Cast your hat in the ring. Cash prizes for the top 8 places.
