Almanac – Guilds

August 23rd, 2012

For this week’s Almanac entry, I’m describing two more of the guilds of Sherbourg. Since Mathilde is visiting the marketplace, it seemed appropriate to discuss the Artisans’ League and the Mercers’ Consortium.

I still didn’t get a chance to upload all the pictures from GenCon. While I’m doing fine for having surgery, I’m on crutches and sleeping a lot. The convention report was one of the casualties. I’ll see about getting it done tomorrow. So keep an eye on our Facebook page.

    Nice joke.

The apothecary/alchemist feud reminds me of the aside-scene in Lynch’s Red Seas Under Red Skies, where you see a boat of armed scribes (a hilarious idea, when you step back and think about it) about to attack a boat carrying the first printing press to their city.

Also: would you send that one picture to me, since I was too slow to think of passing you my camera on Sunday?

        Eric

Will do. It was a good picture of you. Great outfits, by the way. I love the presentation that Geek Chic put together.

I love any chance I get for French cuffs and my cufflinks; not having a desk job any longer, they’re few and far between!

I wish I could take credit for the wall idea; they were new for Gen Con and really class things up. Alas, somebody else gets credit.

I have not read Lynch’s book. Alas, my fiction reading is few and far between these days. All my time goes into reading historical reference books to help me ground Snow by Night in fact. Currently, I’m reading Champlain’s Dream by David Hackett Fischer.

Think of them (The Lies of Locke Lamora being the first) as Ocean’s Eleven, set in a world which seems to be about as fantasy as SbN: there’s certainly magic, but it rarely shows its face and is exceedingly mysterious. The plots are solid and the writing very good.

This is the… third time I think that I’ve heard about Champlain’s Dream from a trustworthy source. I’m going to have to pick up a copy at Powell’s next weekend, I suspect.

Speaking of Powell’s, and background reading, have you seen this http://www.powells.com/biblio/17-2221135459321-0 lovely gem? I’m not buying anything with that many zerosunless it contains bedrooms, but….
